Why It’s So Hard to Rest: Breaking Free from Hustle, Guilt, and Anxiety

Since the pandemic, I’ve heard a phrase more and more: “Rest is resistance.”
At first, I didn’t fully understand it, but as I learned more about capitalism, the pressure of échale ganas, and what it meant to juggle a newborn while finishing my master’s degree, the guilt I felt every time I rested began to make sense.

In her book, Priscilla writes about how, as a child, she loved to read. But instead of encouragement, she heard her parents say, “She’s sitting and doing nothing—we can’t let that happen.”

For many of us, this is all too familiar. Our parents worked hard to survive in a new country, often juggling multiple jobs, sacrificing everything so we could have opportunities. In that world, rest wasn’t seen as self-care, it was seen as laziness. If we weren’t constantly working, we were labeled “floja,” “huevona,” or told “no seas olgazán.”

The message was clear: your worth is tied to how hard you work.

We live in a culture that glorifies constant productivity. But our bodies, and our emotions, are crying out for rest.
Still, we hear: “No te preocupes, va a valer la pena” (Don’t worry, it’ll be worth it).
But what happens when if we don’t rest?
Anxiety, burnout, chronic exhaustion.

Therapy gives us the space to question the messages we’ve internalized about rest, productivity, and guilt.
It’s not just okay to rest, it’s essential.

In therapy, we explore how your nervous system has been shaped by hustle culture and intergenerational expectations.
We make space for your needs.
We learn how to say no without guilt.
We reconnect with your worth outside of what you do for others.

Your worth is not tied to your GPA, your to-do list, or how many people you take care of.
You don’t need to “earn” your rest. You need it to live.

Healing starts when we give ourselves permission to pause.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or burnt out from always needing to be “on,” therapy can help.
I work with first-generation young adults navigating guilt, identity, and emotional burnout.
You’re not lazy, you’re tired from carrying too much. Let’s make space for you.
